A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size.  A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

Although there are several types of crowns, stainless steel crowns are most commonly used in pediatric patients.  Stainless steel crowns are highly durable, easily cleansible and will last many years, ideally until the primary tooth in question exfoliates.

Reasons for crowns:

• Broken or fractured teeth.
• Badly decayed teeth.
• Fractured fillings.
• Large fillings.
• Pulp (nerve) treatment.

A stainless steel crown procedure is done in one visit. Your child's Pediatric Dentist will discuss the procedure in detail with you in advance if a stainless steel crown is the recommended necessary treatment for your child.
